Abstract

Zirconium tetrachloride is prepared in substantially anhydrous form by enclosing it in a container sealed from the atmosphere, wetting the chloride with liquid titanium tetrachloride and evacuating the container interior to remove therefrom the hydrochloric acid gas, excess titanium tetrachloride and air contained therein and, during the evacuation, heating the zirconium tetrachloride to a temperature below its sublimation temperature to drive off the hydrochloric acid and excess titanium tetrachloride.ALSO:Zirconium metal powder is prepared free from oxide, nitride and hydride compounds by bringing anhydrous zirconium, tetrachloride vapour into reactive contact with a molten metal bath, consisting of a metal of the alkaline earth metal group, maintained at a temperature substantially below the boiling point of the metal in an inert atmosphere, e.g. of helium, having a pressure approximating atmospheric pressures. Oxygen-free zirconium tetrachloride vapour may be passed over a molten bath of magnesium. A quantity of zirconium tetrachloride and a quantity of alkaline earth metal may be enclosed in a container and spaced apart from each other, the quantity of the metal being substantially in excess of that required to reduce all the zirconium tetrachloride. The zirconium tetrachloride is wetted with titanium tetrachloride, the vessel is evacuated to remove air, excess titanium tetrachloride and any hydrochloric acid the vessel being gently heated to drive off the last traces of these substances until a continuously maintained low pressure is obtained. The evacuating means is isolated from the vessel, which is filled to approximately atmospheric pressure with a monatomic gas, and the alkaline earth metal and zirconium tetrachloride are heated to melt the metal and sublime the tetrachloride, the temperature being maintained until all the tetrachloride has been sublimed into reactive contact with the alkaline earth metal.
