Abstract

627,572. Feeding stationery through addressing, accounting &c. machines. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H., LANEGAN, F. E., and TIBBLE, J. July 4, 1946, No. 20080. [Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iv)] In mechanism for feeding a continuous web of stationery through an addressing, accounting, tabulating or like recording machine, wherein the web comprises a succession of printed forms each having an impression space and printed matter, such as a heading, and is fed a small amount, e.g. a line space, when printing is being effected on the impression space and an increased amount to feed the heading past the impression position, a web 42 is fed by means of an oscillatory driving-member, shown as an arm 24, the operative stroke of which is sufficient to feed the web a distance equal to the length of the heading, and two intermittent driving connections between the arm 24 and a web-feeding device, such as pin-wheels 28, one driving-connection being maintained long enough to feed the web the length of the heading and the other being shielded for a portion of each stroke of the arm 24 and causing the web to be fed during the remainder only of the stroke. When applied to an addressing- machine, a compensating-device may be provided to feed the web to the next impression space after printing from the last of the series of printing-plates. In the machine shown, address-plates are fed below a table 4, Fig. 1, a web 7 is drawn across the table from a folded pack 8 by pin-wheels 6 fixed to a shaft 5 driven from a motor controlled from a switch operated by an impression head 9, and the web 42 is fed from a pack 43 by the wheels 28 which are carried by a shaft 27 driven from a shaft 20, Figs. 4 and 5, on which the arm 24 is mounted. The intermittent driving connections comprise pawls 25, 26 pivoted on the arm 24 and adapted to drive ratchets 23b, 23a on the shaft 20. The teeth on the ratchets 23a, 23b are spaced distances corresponding to a feed of one form length and line-spacing respectively. The pawl 25 rides over a shield 33 for the first part of its stroke and feeds the wheel 23b one tooth, line-space feeding continuing until the end of a form is reached when the pawl 26 engages a tooth and feeds the heading past the printing position. The arm 24 is oscillated by a connecting rod 18 pivoted to a crank-pin 17 on a gear 16 driven from the shaft 5. The compensating-device comprises a hand-lever 38 carrying a pawl 37 adapted, on being rocked, to catch up with a ratchet 35 adapted to drive the shaft 20. Specification 581,312 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
