626,749. Making rock drills. HELLEFORS BRUKS AKTIEBOLAG. March 3, 1947, No. 6059. Convention date, March 16, 1946. [Class 83 (ii)] In a method of manufacturing rock drills of the type having a bit 1, preferably provided with hard metal cutting edges 7, and a drill bar 2 provided with an axially extending flushing passage 3 connecting with a corresponding passage 4 in the bit, the bit 1 and the drill bar 2 are joined together by resistance flash welding. A sleeve 8, of mica, quartz, ceramic, or other suitable refractory material prevents fused metal from obstructing the flushing passage. A steel or copper rod may be inserted in the sleeve 8 to prevent crushing during striking, and is afterwards withdrawn. The end of the bit or drill bar may be formed with a cylindrical, taper, or wedge-shaped portion, the coacting end of the other part being formed with a corresponding recess.
