Abstract

Condensation products are prepared by heating toluene, xylene or mesitylene which has been partially halogenated in the ring, to a boiling temperature and introducing a halogen into the vapours thereof in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and actinic light. The products are fractionated to give fractions of predetermined boiling ranges. In the chlorination of toluene, according to the invention chlorine is introduced into toluene in the presence of iron at 40-50 DEG C. to give mainly monochlortoluene, the reaction mass is heated to boiling point and chlorine is introduced into the vapour phase during exposure to actinic light and the product is fractionated, giving oily products boiling in the ranges 190-240 DEG C. and 240-290 DEG C. and a resinous compound at 290-350 DEG F. and leaving a pitch-like residue.ALSO:Condensation products are prepared by heating toluene xylene or mesitylene, which has been partially halogenated in the ring, to a boiling temperature and introducing a halogen into the vapours thereof in the presence of a Friedel and Craft catalyst and actinic light to give a mixture of condensation products containing two or more phenyl groups joined by one or more methylene groups, at least one of the phenyl groups containing one or more methyl groups wherein the rings contain one or more halogen atoms. The condensation products are fractionated to give fractions of predetermined boiling ranges. In the chlorination of toluene according to the invention chlorine is introduced into toluene in the presence of iron at 40-50 DEG C. to give mainly monochlortoluene, the reaction mass is then heated to boiling point and chlorine is introduced into the vapour phase during exposure to actinic light, followed by fractionation of the products giving oil products boiling in the ranges 190-240 DEG C. and 240-290 DEG C. and a resinous compound at 290-350 DEG C. leaving a pitch-like residue.
