Abstract
A vulcanizate, a prevulcanizate or a vulcanizable derivative is obtained by heating natural rubber or a synthetic rubber with an aromatic phenol or amine having one position ortho or para to the hydroxyl or amine group substituted by the grouping <FORM:0625845/V/1> (in which R and R1 are hydrogen or alkyl, and r is an organic or inorganic acid radical or hydroxyl) if a vulcanizable derivative is required, or having at least two such positions so substituted to produce a vulcanizate or prevulcanizate. The aromatic compounds may be derived from benzene, or from naphthene, anthracene, phenanthrene, diphenyl or the di- or triphenyl alkyl series and may be substituted with a halogen such as bromine or sulphonic, nitric, cyanic, thiocyanic or cyanide groups, by organic acid radicals, hydroxyl radicals, or primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups. Specified compounds are bis(bromomethyl)-2,6, methyl-4, phenol; bis (bromomethyl)-2,6, methyl-4, aniline; bis(methyl 3, hydroxymethyl 5 hydroxy 6 phenyl methyl) 2,6 methyl 4 phenol; tertiary butyl 2, bis (hydroxymethyl) 4,6, phenol, bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,6 trichloro 3,4,5, phenol; and bis(form-oxy-methyl)-2,6 methyl-4 phenol. Bases such as magnesium oxide, pyridine, aniline and quinoline may be added to react with the acids formed during the reaction. The term natural rubber includes gutta percha and baleta but not reclaimed rubber. In examples, 100 parts of rubber are mixed with 10 - 40 parts of one of the specified aromatic compounds and then heated for 30 - 120 minutes at a temperature of 125 - 155 DEG C.
