625,474. Coated enamels &c. PODMORE & SONS, Ltd., W., and PODMORE, H. L. March 12, 1947, No. 6909. [Class 56] Finely ground particles of lead silicate frits and enamel fluxes are coated with a thin layer of a material which is impervious to and insoluble in weak acid solution. Alkali or organo silicates may be used, e.g. a coating may consist of silica gel formed by the hydrolysis of an alkali silicate, or of ethoxy polymers formed by the condensation of ethyl silicate or ethyl silicate cellulose nitrate lacquer. In one example the frit is wet ground so that 95 per cent passes a 200 B.S.S., deflocculated, the particles of less than .01 mm. diameter removed and the remainder dried and disintegrated. The powder is then mixed with a partly hydrolysed solution of ethyl silicate in aqueous ethyl alcohol, such that a gel is formed soon after the surplus liquid is filtered off. The coated frit is air dried, at not more than 200‹C, and disintegrated. The resultant is not attacked by gastric juices and the danger of lead poisoning among enamelling operatives is thereby reduced. When two separate coatings are applied in this way a more effective product is obtained.
