[Class 35] A machine for winding coils in a slotted core has a wire feeding head movable parallel to the lines of the slots, the head or core being moved after the wire has been laid in one slot to enable it to be returned along another slot, the wire being guided by rollers or the like spring pressed on to the wire. As shown, the core 3 is mounted at the centre of a cradle 7 rocked to- and-fro about its horizontal axis by a linkage including cam 8, the throw matching the slot pitch and a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 6, 28, 29 is provided to turn the core when each pair of slots has been wound. The winding head 12 is on the upper part 11 of a U-shaped member 10 pivoted on the cradle 7 and given a motion parallel to the core axis as well as the rocking movement of the cradle and so draws the wire into the slots in conjunction with one or other of the two rollers 19, 20, spring pressed on to the wire 13 and supported by camoperated arms 21 on cradle 7 to take them to and from their operative position, according to the direction of movement of the-head 12. A pressure finger 24 operated by another cam 25 presses the wire down into each slot. The pitch of the coils being wound may be adjusted by electromagnetic control without stopping the machine and the machine may be made fully automatic by using a counting device. It is also adaptable for internally slotted cores.
