Abstract

624,058. Bearings; lubricating. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 6, 1947, No. 15009. Convention date, June 8, 1946. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (iii)] A sealed sleeve bearing assembly suitable for interchanging with an antifriction bearing in an electric motor bearing housing 3 comprises a cylindrical member 5 within which are disposed annular wall members 9, a bearing 4 supported by the members 9, an oil chamber in the bottom of the member 5, means in the space between the wall members 9 for conveying oil to the bearing, and sealing means comprising felt seals 12 carried by members 11 at the ends of the cylindrical member 5. Each wall member 9 is cut off at the bottom where the oil reservoir is formed, and the end members 9 separated by a ring member 7 tightly fitting within the cylindrical member 5. The parts may be formed of sheet metal and brazed together. In Fig. 3, the bearing 4 comprises a porous metal sleeve and is lubricated by an annular wick 13 resting on the bearing and dipping into the oil 14. In a modification the bearing comprises a steel sleeve having a lining of babbit metal, a window being cut in the upper side of the bearing to permit the annular wick to rest on the shaft.
