Abstract

623,259. Washing gases. CLARK, A. R., and BUCK, J. C. April 22, 1947, No. 10792. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1944. [Class 55 (ii)] In apparatus for washing gases, particularly air, the air is swept over the surface of water in the tank 2 and through the waterwash chamber 1 by a blower 5. A horizontally extending bar 11 is fixed across the air entrance to the waterwash chamber with its bottom edge level with the water surface. The water surface to the right of the bar 11 will rise, forming a wave, due to the decreased pressure within the apparatus when the fan is in operation, the water level to the left of the bar 11 falling a corresponding amount; a narrow opening is thus formed between edge of the bar and the water surface. Air rushing through this opening strikes against the wave and carries away a portion of it. The air passing over the top of the bar mixes with the water-air mixture and passes around a partition 14 into the chamber 1 along guides 15, 16. Due to the velocity imparted to it the water ejected from the edge 17 strikes against the guide 18, a portion of it flowing downwardly across 14 where it is again picked up by the air current. In the reversal of the air flow caused by guides 19, 19a most of the remaining water is thrown out and flows down the rear side of guide 16 to the water tank 2. Directed by guides 21, 22 the air strikes against the front wall 24 and the rear wall 20, the water thereby removed returning by channels between 18 and 24, and between 19 and 20. Any remaining water may be caught by the T baffle 26 or side baffles 27 and 28. The guides are detachably supported on brackets on the walls of the chamber 1, hooks 38 engaging over the brackets. A transverse plate 29 prevents turbulence in the water surface.
