Abstract

In the recovery of an antibiotic from the metabolism fluid of the bacillus known as B. aerosporus Greer or B. polymyoca (Praymowski) Migula, by the process of Specification 619,572, the first treatment with charcoal is preceded by heating under acid conditions, preferably in the presence of hydrochloric acid (e.g. 2 per cent by weight of the mixture of 40 per cent hydrochloric acid), or sulphuric acid. The time and temperature of heating (e.g. 30 minutes at 80 DEG C.) and the acidity (pH below 6, preferably about 2.5) should be such that at least 90 per cent of the gummy impurity present is converted into a non-gummy form while leaving at least 90 per cent of the antibiotic activity unimpaired. If the metabolism fluid already has a pH below 6, the addition of further acid, though desirable, is not essential.
