Abstract

In the interpolymerization of styrene or substituted styrenes with one or more partially-polymerized polyhydric alcoholic mixed esters, the process is carried out by heating to a temperature up to 250 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure. If desired, the styrene may be added in portions during the process. The reaction may be carried out in presence of a monocyclic a -terpene which may be added continuously or intermittently during the reaction. Preferably, interpolymerization is carried out in solution, suitable solvents are xylene, white spirit and excess monomeric styrene or nuclear substituted styrene, the latter being removed at the conclusion of the reaction. Specified partiallypolymerized mixed esters are a 7-poise dehydrated castor oil, linseed-oiticica stand oil and a blown linseed-oiticica enamel oil, also suitable are partially - polymerized esters containing a proportion of conjugated triene fatty acid radicles associated with unsaturated fatty acid radicles of other types. The partially-polymerized mixed ester may be an oil-modified alkyd resin or combined with an oil-soluble alkyl or aryl substituted phenol-formaldehyde condensation product.
