Abstract

622,575. Ironing-boards. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 28, 1947, No. 8496. Convention date, May 31, 1946. [Class 138 (ii)] A pad for an ironing board comprises a thick layer 11 of water-absorbing padding material and a flat water-tight bag enclosing this material and arranged to confine enough water to keep the padding saturated during use. The layer 11 is made of sponge-rubber, textile padding, or a mat of glass, asbestos, mineral wool, hemp or other fibres; if desired, the material of the padding may be bonded in place by a highmelting or infusible resin. The bag is made of two sheets 12, 13 of woven fabric which are coated with rubber on their inner faces and are bonded together so as to form edge flanges 14. Both sheets 12, 13 may be formed of a woven cotton fabric with a rubber film on the inner face, or the upper sheet may be of woven asbestos yarn. Grommets 15 are provided in the flanges 14 so that the pad may be laced to the ironing board on which it is placed. The bag is provided with a screw-stopper at one end for filling with water, and, when in use, an asbestos or other cover may be laced over the pad. In an alternative construction, the watertight cover may be in the form of an impervious skin of rubber which is applied to, or formed integrally with, the sponge rubber padding 11.
