Abstract

Copper-containing catalysts for use in the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol (see Group IV (b)) comprises copper on zinc oxide or on magnesia or g -alumina, copper chromite, or foraminate copper catalysts obtainable by partial removal of the alloying element from granulated copper-aluminium, copper-zinc, copper-silicon or (according to the second Provisional Specification) copper-magnesium alloys, as described in Specification 621,749. In the preparation of typical catalysts, (1) a soda solution is added to a solution of copper and zinc nitrates or sulphates and the precipitate is filtered, washed, calcined and pelleted, the pellets being then reduced at 300 DEG C. with hydrogen diluted with nitrogen; (2) g -alumina or activated alumina is impregnated with copper nitrate solution and the product is ignited and then reduced at 300 DEG C. with dilute hydrogen; (3) soda is added to a solution of copper and aluminium salts and the precipitate is heated, pelleted and reduced. The catalysts used contain also an alkaline or basic substance derived from an alkali or alkaline-earth metal, e.g. sodium or potassium carbonate or oxide or sodium acetate, and the hydrogenation may be p effected at 200-280 DEG C. in a liquid-jacketed converter, decahydronaphthalene being a suitable liquid.ALSO:Furfuryl alcohol is obtained by treating furfural with hydrogen in the vapour phase at atmospheric or moderately raised pressure and at a raised temperature in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst which contains also an alkaline or basic substance derived from an alkali or alkaline-earth metal or magnesium. Suitable catalysts are copper on zinc oxide or on magnesia or g -alumina, copper chromite, or foraminate copper catalysts obtainable by partial removal of the alloying element from granulated copper-aluminium, copper-zinc or copper silicon alloys, as described in Specification 621,749. Details of the preparation of suitable catalysts are given (see Group III). The alkaline or basic substance included in the catalyst may be sodium or potassium carbonate or oxide or sodium acetate. The reaction is preferably effected at 200-280 DEG C. at a pressure up to 5 atmospheres, and may be carried out in a liquid-jacketed converter, decahydronaphthalene being a suitable liquid. Examples of the process are given, and Specifications 505,600 and 605,707 are referred to.
