Abstract

621,530. Grinding. JONES & LAMSON MACHINE CO. Jan. 9, 1947, No. 794. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1946. [Class 60] [Also in Groups XXII, XXIV and XXX] A grinding-machine comprises a rotatable and axially-movable spindle 40, an axially-movable ram 150 actuated by cam means 34 to push a workpiece W automatically from a loading position in line with the spindle to a chuck 42 carried by the spindle and actuated automatically to grip and release a workpiece pushed thereto, and means for moving the spindle and ram as a unit for operative engagement of a grinding tool 26 with the workpiece. In a screw-thread grinding machine of the type described in Specification 478,757, having an angularly-adjustable grinding wheel 26, a continuously-driven motor 32 rotates a cam drum 34 and a cam disc 36 at predetermined intervals through a solenoidoperated clutch (see Group XXIV). The cam disc 36 controls the continuous feeding of the workpiece (see Group XXX) by rocking a shaft 80 to oscillate arms 54, 56 carrying spring fingers 70, 72 which transfer blanks from a ratchet-operated drum 106 to a chuck 42 (see Group XXII) carried on a spindle 40, and transfer screws from the chuck to a shoot 142. As a blank is presented before the chuck 42, a ram 150, controlled by the cam-drum 34 (see Group XXIV) pushes it into the chuck, which is closed by a rod 44. The chuck, the spindle 40 and the ram 150 are then advanced as a unit past the wheel 26 by rotation of a screw 230 by a pinion 242 engaging a gear 244, the screw being fast on the spindle 40 and engaging in a fixed nut 240, thus grinding a thread on to the blank. The finished screw is ejected into the transfer fingers 72 by an ejector on the end of the rod 44.
