Abstract

A h mostatic surgical dressing comprises alginic acid partially converted into a metallic alginate, such as aluminium, beryllium, calcium, chromium, iron, strontium or zinc, in order to render it stable during steam sterilization. In one form of preparation, gauze woven from calcium alginate is washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, to cause partial conversion to alginic acid, until it contains between only 2 and 6 per cent of calcium after which it is washed in water to remove the excess hydrochloric acid. It is then buffered, by dipping in acid potassium phthalate and washing to a pH of about 4, to stabilize the unconverted portion of the alginic acid and finally dried.
