Abstract

[Class 37] [Also in Groups XXXIX and XL (c)] A meter is coupled to a transmission line so that energy is transmitted to it substantially only when power travels in a predetermined direction in the transmission line. A load comprising a resistor 29 and a high-frequency ammeter 13 is coupled to coaxial line 11 by a loop of coaxial line 21 which has a section of bare inner conductor, approximately #/2 in length, parallel to an exposed length of the inner conductor of line 11. Both lines are enclosed within a metal box 19, the outer conductors being connected to the box, the inner conductors being increased in diameter to maintain constant impedance characteristics. The lines may be electrostatically screened by wires 23, or the box may be filled with a material of high dielectric constant. The line 21 is a sliding fit in bushes 25 and its exterior portions are joined by a bar 24 so that the distance between the parallel portions of the two lines may be adjusted. Energy transmitted from generator 15 to aerial 17 induces energy in line 21 which is indicated by meter 13. Energy transmitted from the aerial back to the generator induces energy which is dissipated by load 27, no indication being given by the meter.
