Abstract
621,114. Magnetostrictive oscillators. STEVENS, A. H. (Submarine Signal Co.). June 8, 1945, No. 14637. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 23, 1946.] [Class 40 (iv)] A magnetostrictive oscillator includes a number of acoustically tuned magnetostriction tubes 8 secured to a diaphragm 6 while the other ends of the tubes are detachably secured to a heavy plate 1. The tubes may have solid frusto-conical ends fitting in recesses in plate 1 and drawn therein by screws 10 passing through the plate. The structure may be enclosed in a casing so that fluid pressure can be exerted on the diaphragm to maintain the tubes in a state of tension even if the external medium is under pressure. The tubes may be so dimensioned that two nodes occur therein during oscillation, separate exciting coils being located at each nodal region. A third coil is situated between these producing a magnetic flux in the opposite direction.
