618,785. Work-holders; transferring blanks. BOWER, B. F. June 28, 1946, No. 19433. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] A transfer and work-holding device comprises two jaws 8, 10, for gripping a blank 22, such as a tube or rod, means 18 adjacent one jaw 10 for directing a blank to the device, means for moving the jaw 10 between a work-receiving position and a work-holding position, a transfer finger 31 adapted to be moved along the path of the jaw 10 between a position in which it holds the blank in said jaw as the latter advances and a retracted position when the blank is gripped by the jaws, means for rendering the finger-advancing means inoperative as the jaw 10 is retracted, and release means 47 operable at the end of the retraction of the jaw, to render the finger-advancing means again operative. After machining of the work, the jaw 10 is retracted by a fluid-pressure-operated piston 25, thus allowing a blank 22 to drop to a slide 9 before the jaw abuts a stop 47 to release a catch 35 and allow the finger 31 to advance under fluid-pressure to eject the finished piece into a shoot 13 and abut the blank 22. The jaw 10 and the finger 31 are then together moved until the blank is gripped between the jaws. The finger may be actuated by spring or electrical means.
