Abstract

618,511. Packing-machines. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. March 18, 1946, No. 8297. Convention date, May 2, 1939. [Class 94 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A bag-filling machine has one or more hoppers and one or more guide members depending therefrom, a bag clamp and a bag opening member attached at its upper end to the clamp and converging at its lower end to a common centre.. As shown a rotatably mounted spider 54 carries a bag opener, formed of rods 91 meeting at an apex 92, which is attached to a slide 77 on a bag piler 56 and which is inserted into a bag which is attached to clamps 84. The slide is then raised by means of arms 59 operated by cams and rods until the bottom of the bag comes against the bottom of the filler 56. A weighed quantity of the filling material is then discharged from a spout 95 into a hopper 55 also carried on the spider 54. The bag after filling is lowered on to a conveyer and released, the opener being raised sufficiently to clear the filled bag before being lowered to its original position. The filled bag passes over a jigging section of the conveyor to a closing position where first the front and rear portions are tucked in by fingers, Fig. 12 (not shown), then the sides are closed by other fingers the closed sides being received, by a pair of belts Fig. 20 (not shown) pressed resiliently against the bag by rollers. At the same time bars shape the shoulders of the bag. Frames carrying the belt and rollers and shaping bars may be adjusted by operation of a crank handle. During their progress along the conveyor the bags are supported by bars 150, 151 and boards. The closed bag is then sewn and the top trimmed by a knife. U.S.A. Specification 1,625,781 is referred to.
