Abstract

618,296. Stand heads. GOSS, H. W. Oct. 14, 1946, No. 30596. [Class 52 (iii)] A tripod head for supporting a camera or the like in which a universal ball-joint affording adjustment or traversing motion by a radial handle 7 extending from the joint is characterised in that the joint is locked or unlocked to prevent or permit movement or adjustment of the camera by means of a hand pressed lever 8 fitted in a pistol grip portion 7a formed on the handle, said lever being adapted to engage a push rod 6 located in the handle and connected to a shoe 5 housed in a recess formed in the ball-joint housing 1 and engaging the ball. The manual operation of the lever 8 which causes tangential displacement of the shoe with respect to the ball may be with or against the pressure of a spring housed in the pistol grip. Alternatively the spring may be housed in the radial handle and may act on the push rod or shoe directly. In further modifications the lever 8 may be disposed of and the push rod extended to project beyond the handle to be thumb pressed against suitable spring means to operate the joint. The camera is mounted on a knurled screw itself mounted in the upper part of the ball joint housing and the tripod legs are attached to an extension formed on the ball. The pistol grip may be suitably recessed to house a spirit level and fitted with a releasable support for shutter actuating means on the camera.
