Abstract

617,296. Stuffing-box substitutes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and TREVASKIS, H. W. Sept. 25, 1946, No. 28597. [Class 122 (v)] In a seal for a rotary shaft, Fig. 1, a jointless resilient ring 5 is fitted into a non-circular endless groove of sinuous form in a shaft 1 and presses against the base of a gland 3, lubricating pads 6 of absorbent material being inset in the shaft and positioned between the sinuations of the groove so that the entire sealing face of the resilient ring is lubricated during rotation. The resilient ring and the lubricating pads may alternatively be disposed in the gland. In an embodiment applied to a thrust collar, Fig. 3, a resilient ring 5a is fitted into a sinuous groove in a flange 3a, and lubricating pads 6a are positioned between the sinuations of the groove. The resilient ring and lubricating pads may alternatively be disposed in the member 2a.
