Abstract

617,295. Thermometers. GALL, D. C. Sept. 24, 1946, No. 28588. [Class 97 (iii)] A temperature-sensitive element such as a thermocouple or a resistance thermometer is enclosed in a spring-loaded protective sheath which is retracted to expose the element when the unit is attached to its mounting. In the unit shown in Fig. 1, the element 5 is mounted within a tube 3 carried by a holder 1 comprising a hollow screw with a nut-shaped end and the tube 3 is surrounded by a tube 2 having an enlarged end slidable in the holder 1 and urged forward by a spring 4 to shroud the end of the element 5. On screwing the holder 1 into the mounting, the tube 3 and element 5 move forward with the holder, but the enlarged end of the tube 2 is held back by the mounting, the end of the element thus becoming exposed. A sealing ring 7 may be provided between the mounting and the enlarged part of the tube 2. The element 5 is connected to terminals in an external head 6. A sealing ring 8 may be provided on the end of the tube 3 to engage a tapered part of the tube 2. The tube 2 may be positively retained in the extended position by a spring-urged lever 9, Fig. 2, which is disengaged on screwing the holder into the mounting. In a modification, the tube 2 is retained by a spring-pressed ball which is displaceable when considerable inward force is applied to the tube.
