617,130. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26834. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1945. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIX] Mechanism for converting unidirectional motion of an endless chain 9 into reciprocating motion of a carriage 1, slidable on guide rails 3, comprises a pair of toggle arms 20, 21, pivoted on the carriage 1 at 22, 24 and loosely jointed to each other at 27. The arms have teeth 29, 30 alternately engageable with the chain 9. As the carriage approaches one of the sprockets 10, 11 supporting the driving chain 9, a roller 35 or 36 on a fixed bracket 39 engages a cam surface 33 on an extension of an arm 20 or 21, to snap the toggle linkage over and engage the other of the teeth 29, 30 with the opposite run of the chain to reverse the motion of the carriage. In a modification, each arm has two indentations 41, Fig. 6, one of which is engaged by a spring-pressed ball 42 in the carriage 1 in each position of the arm. As shown, the mechanism is applied to an automatic telephone exchange, in which the selector switch carriage 1 carries contact brushes 6 conducting electricity from a feed bar 7 to terminal pins 8 arranged in bank relation.
