Abstract

In the production of regenerated cellulose products by the viscose process, the coagulated and at least partly regenerated but not desulphurized products are treated with a solution of a metaphosphate, tetraphosphate or polyphosphate or a corresponding free phosphoric acid, whereby impurities causing discolouration are removed. Preferably, the product is treated while still wet from the coagulating bath. The acidity of the solution should correspond to pH3 or lower (this is including acidity due to acid from the coagulating bath). In the preferred method of carrying out the invention, the phosphate, especially an alkali metal hexametaphosphate, in amount 0.025 to 0.1 per cent based on the water is added to one or more portions of the wash water used for the removal of the acid coagulating bath. The phosphate is of advantage added to the first wash water, but if desired it may be included in subsequent washes. The temperature of the wash liquid is preferably between 50 DEG and 60 DEG C., though temperatures down to 30 DEG C. may be used. Any commercially available alkali metal metaphosphate may be employed, such as Graham's salt, "Buromin," "Calgon" (both Registered Trade Marks), Sofos, Quadrafos and sodium tri-polyphosphate. In an example, a freshly-spun unwashed cake of viscose yarn on a foraminated aluminium bobbin is placed in a washing unit equipped with evacuation apparatus. After effecting the vacuum seal, the tub is filled with wash water at 60 DEG C. to which 0.1 per cent sodium hexametaphosphate has been added, and washing continued for 50 minutes. The tub is then drained and the yarn package washed with hot water and desulphurised &c.
