Abstract

Self-supporting films containing vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers and 10-90 per cent of a butadiene-acrylonitrile type copolymer, the percentage being based on the total vinyl resinbutadiene copolymer weight, are stabilized by the incorporation of 0.5 to 5 per cent of a tetra alkyl thiuram disulphide in which each alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. "Acrylonitrile" is defined as a compound CH2 = C.R.CN where R is H, Cl, CH3, C2H5 or C3H7 and "butadiene" as a compound (R1)2 =CR11-CR1=C(R1)2, where R1 is chose from H and CH3 and R11 is chosen from H, CH3 and Cl. The disulphides specified are tetra-methyl, -ethyl, -propyl, -isopropyl, -butyl, -isobutyl and -tert. butyl thiuram disulphides, N-dimethyl-N1 diethyl-, N-methyl-N propyl-N1 ethyl-N1 butyl thiuram disulphides and disulphides having a ring structure in which N and/or N1 are members. Vinyl resins specified are polyvinyl chloride, and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, butyrate and other fatty acid esters, vinyl ethers and ketones, vinylidene chloride, vinyl bromide and styrene. The diene copolymer is preferably prepared as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,281,613, in aqueous emulsion with an alkyl mercaptan as modifier. The ingredients may be cast together using a mixture such as xylene and methyl ethyl ketone; paraffin wax may be added.ALSO:Self-supporting films containing vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers and 10 - 90 per cent of a butadiene-acrylonitrile type copolymer, the percentage being based on the total vinyl resinbutadiene copolymer weight, are stabilized by 0.5 to 5 per cent of the weight of vinyl chloride resin of a tetra alkyl thiuram disulphide in which each alkyl group contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. "Acrylonitrile" is defined as a compound CH2=CRCN where R is H, Cl, CH3 C2H5 or C3 H7 and "butadiene" as a compound (R1)2C= CR11-CR1=C(R1)2 where R1 is chosen from H1 & CH3 and R11 from H, Cl & CH3. The disulphides specified are tetra-methyl, -ethyl, -propyl, -isopropyl, -butyl and -isobutyl and -tert butyl thiuram disulphides, mixed alkyl disulphides and compounds having a ring structure in which the nitrogen atoms are members of the rings. The ingredients may be cast together using xylene, methyl ethyl ketone and paraffin wax.
