[Class 138(ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXXII] A machine for washing clothes is arranged with the wash tub 88, the rotatable means for rapidly rotating the clothes within the tub, and substantially the entire driving and controlling mechanism for the said rotatable means disposed on a platform 70 so as to form a freely-floating unit resiliently suspended within the machine casing 40, the suspension means being in the form of members 71 which are connected to the unit below the bottom of the tub and to the casing at a level in proximity to the top of the tub The invention is described as applied to the machine disclosed in Specification 615,708 in which the clothes are automatically washed, rinsed and dried in a perforated receptacle 108 carried on a hollow shaft 101 within which is mounted a shaft 113 carrying an agitator 117. The shaft 113 and agitator 117 are oscillated during the washing and rinsing cycles, and the shaft 101 and receptacle 108 are rotated at high speed for drying. The receptacle 108 is disposed within the tub 88 which is bolted to the top of the platform 70. The motor and other mechanism for driving the agitator and receptacle are mounted on the underside of the platform, as are a pump for emptying the tub and most of the devices for controlling the operation of the machine. The casing 40 comprises four corner posts 57 connected by upper and lower members 58 and enclosed by panelling. Each of the suspension members 71 comprises a rod 76 provided at each end with a spherical member 75 of rubber or like material secured thereto by a threaded stud 77. The upper spherical member 75 is received in a hemispherical socket 80 formed in a mounting member 74 on the upper frame member 58, being secured in position by a hemispherical cap 81. The lower spherical member engages a hemispherical recess 83 in the underside of a lug 72 on the platform 70 and is retained therein by a cap 85. One suspension member 71 is disposed in each of two adjacent corners of the casing and the third member is positioned midway of the opposite wall of the casing. An annular guard rim 118, which is detachably secured by a flexible ring 119 to the edge of the tub 88, extends inwardly for the support of a funnel-shaped member 121 serving to facilitate the introduction into the machine of the goods to be washed; a weighted ring 122 on the member 121 tends to reduce the swinging movement of the platform 70.
