[Class 135] [Also in Group XXIV] A centrifugal valve for a hydraulically-controlled friction clutch comprises two relatively movable members each urged by a separate spring oppositely to the centrifugal force. When the clutch plate 12 is at rest, the extension 5 of the valve 1 closes the fluid admission and discharge ports 17, 18, respectively, so that fluid pressure via the duct 14 operates the piston 15 to engage the clutch. As the engine speed increases to idling speed, the assembly of valve 1 resiliently coupled to a mass 8 through a spring 10 moves outwards against the spring 13 until a shoulder 9 on the mass abuts the end of the lining 11, the valve 2 closes the port 19, and the ports 17, 18 are opened to release pressure fluid from behind the piston. If the speed further increases, the valve 1 moves outwards against the spring 10 and fluid pressure acting in chamber 20 via the holes in extension 5, until first the port 18 and then the port 17 are closed to produce a gradual engagement of the clutch. At the instant port 18 is closed, the port 19 is opened and drains fluid from the chamber 20 so that the extension 5 of the valve sharply abuts the outer end of the lining. As the speed decreases, the valve 1 moves inwards, closes port 19 and pressure fluid in chamber 20 sharply opens port 18 to disengage the clutch at a speed lower than that for engagement.
