Abstract

615,484. Casting-machines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 6, 1946, No. 17282. Convention date, April 13, 1942. [Class 83 (i)] [Also in Group V] In a method of casting, molten metal is drawn upwardly into an exhausted mould through a rising tube by which the mould is continuously connected to a bath of molten metal, the mould being exhausted rapidly and the ascending liquid being checked sufficiently to allow a high vacuum to be attained in the mould, but the rate of flow being sufficient to fill the mould by impact. The bottom of a two-part mould 6, 7 communicates through a connecting piece 11 with a vertical tube 8, 30 cms. long and 30 mms. diameter, the lower end of which has an inlet restricted to a diameter of 6 mms. beneath the surface of molten metal 2 in a pot 1 heated by burners 3. The tube 8 and connecting piece 11 may be heated by electric heaters 12 and 13. The mould is housed within a chamber formed by a cover 16 and a cylindrical wall 24 and connected by a pipe 22 to a vessel 18 and a vacuum pump 19. With the apparatus in the position, as shown in the Figure, the pump 19 is started and the vessel 18 evacuated. Tap 17 is then opened to connect the mould housing to the vessel and rapid evacuation of the mould occurs through a narrow space 20 between the upper and lower parts 6 and 7. Molten metal rises in the tube 8 and reaches the mould when the latter has been substantially evacuated. After filling the mould, the molten metal reaches the narrow passage 20 where it solidifies rapidly and so produces a sudden check in the flow. This causes a considerable rise in pressure within the mould due to the momentum of the liquid column, thereby producing a good impression.
