Abstract

An open circuit respiratory apparatus for divers comprises a source of compressed gas, a lung-operated diaphragm valve regulating the supply of gas in which the diaphragm is directly affected by the surrounding water pressure, a mouthpiece or similar device communicating with the diver's mouth or nose and connected with the pressure reducing valve, and an exit gas pipe from the mouthpiece which is closed by a non-return valve located at a distance of not more than 10 cms., and preferably less than 3 cms., from the centre of pressure of the diaphragm of the lung-operated valve, which may have a perforated cover, and the non-return valve on the gas exit pipe from the mouthpiece may consist of a flattened rubber pipe.
