Abstract

614,079. Boxes. PETRIE, W. K. July 4, 1946, No. 20035. [Class 18] A box capable of expanding in at least two directions comprises sections 1-4, each consisting of two side panels and a bottom portion, the sides of adjacent sections overlapping and being slidable relative to each other. The outer vertical edges of overlapping side panels may be creased to engage each other when the box is fully expanded or slots 5 may be provided in at least one panel of selected sections, a pin 6, held in the overlapping panel, sliding in the slot. Alternatively a T-shaped strip may be secured at both ends to an underlying side panel of each section and a loop secured to the overlapping section to slide on the strip and abut against the T-end at the point of maximum expansion of the box. Each section may have a lid panel or a similar box may be constructed to fit into or over the first, to close it and provide for expansion in the third direction. A band may be secured to one section of the box, passing through eyes secured to other sections, to encircle the box, the portions passing through the eyes being narrowed to limit their movement. A shoulder strap may be fitted. Finger holes may be provided in overlapping side panels, in alignment with slots to assist in expanding the box. The finger holes may be covered by flaps.
