Abstract

613,422. Brakes. RYDE, A. HULL-. May 17, 1945, No. 12444. Convention date, June 25, 1943. [Class 103 (i)] A master cylinder assembly for operating brakes or the like comprises a piston 2 which forces fluid through the brake connection 10, in the initial stage, under the influence of hydraulic pressure exerted by the piston 15 in the bore 14, and, in the final stage of the brake application, under the influence of the pressure in the bore 14 and of the same pressure transmitted, as described below, to the space 23 behind the packing 4 carried by the piston 2. The pedal pressure is transmitted by a rod 42 to the piston 15 which is axially bored to receive a return spring 17 and a valve 29 in the form of a plunger having a head 36. When the rod 42 is first pressed in, the pistons 15, 2 move together because of the fluid trapped between them. As the pressure in the cylinder 14 rises, the pressure transmitted to the space 37 through the passages 32, 40 in the valve, becomes sufficient to overcome the opposing pressure and the spring 33, and the valve moves forward to align the passages 31 and groove 30 with the passage 27 leading to the space 23. The pressure in this space closes a valve 24 to shut-off the space 23 from the space 21 connected to the space 5 and reservoir 6 by passages 22. The space 38 is connected to atmosphere or to the reservoir 6 so that movements of the valve 29 are not impeded by pressure in this space. A check valve 11 is fitted at the brake connection 10, and fluid is supplied from the reservoir 6 to the cylinder 14 through a priming-valve 19. In a modification, the member 29 is provided with a spring- loaded valve in the passage 40, the valve having a restricted opening therethrough. The passages 32, 40 are of increased diameter, so that, when the pressure in the space 37 exceeds that in the bore 14, the valve lifts and permits the excess pressure to be vented quickly. The restricted opening in the valve permits normal functioning when the pressure in the space 37 is building up.
