Abstract
613,270. Mercury switches; magnetic switches. ELECTRICAL STEAM & MINING EQUIPMENT (LONDON), Ltd., and WEBB, E. F. D. June 14, 1946, No. 17931. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch wherein the movement of a permanent magnet 15 causes corresponding movement of an armature 11 floating in mercury in a sealed envelope 10, spaced members 12, 13 of non-permanent magnetic material are arranged so as to be opposite to the poles of to magnet, when it is moved into the operating position " b," Fig. 1. In this position, the magnet attracts the armature 11 into the position shown. When the magnet 15 is in position " a," both poles are opposite to the sleeve 13 which provides a closed circuit for the flux so that the armature 11 is unaffected and returns to its floating position. The polepieces of the magnet 15 are preferably ground concave to conform to the tube 14 of non-magnetic material. The opposed ends of the sleeves 12 and 13 may be chamfered from the outer to the inner radius in order to concentrate the flux as near as possible to the armature. Also the magnet 15 may be of tubular form to surround the tube 14.
