Abstract

613,134. Photographic materials. KODAK, Ltd., JANUS, J. W., RAY, A. A., and HANCE, G. Jan. 31, 1946, No. 3130. [Class 98 (ii)] To facilitate recognition of the non-emulsion bearing side of a sensitive photographic material, the rear surface of the support is provided with a layer having smooth and matt areas so arranged that the matt areas can be readily recognized by touch, e.g. in alternate strips. This touch-recognizable layer may be produced on the rear of the support, i.e. a film support or a glass plate, by (1) first coating the support with a smooth layer and then either coating parts of it with a matt layer to form a pattern or spreading over selected areas a powder, which may be of the same composition as the binder of the smooth layer, whilst the smooth layer is still tacky; or (2) using a wick type spreader consisting of a cloth wick fed by a perforated or slotted pipe on each side of the wick so that each tube feeds alternate sections of the wick, and thereby coating the base with alternate strips of matt and smooth layers. Preferably, the smooth layer is an anti-halation layer which will dissolve in alkaline developers, e.g. a layer as described in Specification 565,125, and the matt layer is similar but contains a small amount of boric acid. If applied by dusting on in powdered form, the matt layer may be polyvinyl phthalate, a rosin maleic anhydride condensation product prepared as described in Specification 355,281, [Group IV], or a glyptal resin such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Abralac P."
