Abstract
A process for softening water comprises treatment of the water with lime and/or sodium carbonate or caustic soda to precipitate calcium carbonate and/or magnesium hydroxide therefrom, coagulation of the precipitate by adding soluble silica, and, if desired, sodium aluminate or aluminium sulphate, and thereafter separating the precipitate from the water. The soluble silica is preferably a sodium silicate solution which has been nearly neutralised by addition of sulphuric acid or chlorine, or by converting the caustic alkalinity to carbonate by treatment with carbon dioxide or sodium bicarbonate. The silica solution may contain 0.1 to 3.0 per cent Si O2, and 1 mole Na2O per 10 to 50 moles of Si O2. The amount added is between 2 and 50, (preferably between 5 and 20), parts by weight of Si O2 per million parts of water. Four examples of the process are given.
