[Class 112] In a curved-needle awl-feed lockstitch boot-sole sewing machine, having needle and awl on the same side of the work, the needle moves in a fixed (adjustable) plane and the awl moves laterally into the plane of the needle from a fixed distance to one side, the stitch-length being varied by causing the awl to make a variable portion of its lateral movement before it penetrates the work. Perforating-devices; feed by awl.- The awl 1 is carried by an arm 3 mounted rotatably and slidably in a bearing on an axis 5, the arm being provided with a lug 37 fitting, so as to be slidable parallel to the axis, in a notch 35 formed in the hub portion of a cam-actuated arm 19 mounted on the outside of the same bearing. The arm 3 is located alung the axis by a groove embracing an arcuate member 43 carried adjustably on a slide 47 which is reciprocated parallel to the axis 5 by a cam-actuated rock-shaft 77; the shaft 77 has a crank-pin 75 engaging a diametrical slot in a member 59 which is rotatably adjustable in a part 57 of the slide 47 so that the slot may be nearly tangential to one or other end of the path of the crankpin or may lie in an intermediate position, the motion of the slide being thus made slower at one end of the stroke than at the other, as desired. The awl pauses before entering the work, so that a larger or smaller part of its lateral movement, depending on the relative speeds of the first and last parts of this movement, is performed before the work is engaged and fed for the remainder of the movement. According to the Provisional Specification, the presser-foot may be adjustable laterally of the machine so that it can lie close to the point of penetration of the awl for any stitch length. Lock-stitching by shuttles.-The needle 55 is carried by an arm 89 oscillatable about the same axis 5 as the awl and having similar lug and notch engagement 123, 121 with a cam-actuated arm 117. The arm 89 is located along the axis 5 by a groove in the arm 89 engaging an arcuate member similar to that (43) locating the awl, this member being slidably adjustable on the frame.
