Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride compositions having a low dielectric loss factor comprise a vinyl chloride polymer or a copolymer thereof with another vinyl compound, a filler and a plasticiser consisting of a hydrocarbon extract of average mol. wt. 200-800, b.p. 250-800 DEG C. at 760 mm. and a carbon content of at least 0.6 atoms per atom of hydrogen, obtained by extracting a mineral oil fraction with one or more selective solvents, one at least being polar, e.g. a mixture of sulphur dioxide and benzene. Some of the hydrocarbons of the extract are unsaturated and contain up to 2 unsaturated links per molecule. Before use the extract may be subjected to air-blowing, sulphur treatment, chlorination, adsorption on porous solids, clay or acid treatment, hydrogenation or distillation. Preferably a finely divided filler, e.g. silica gel, is used. If desired the composition may also contain known plasticisers, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate and dibenzyl sebacate, and a minor proportion of stabiliser, e.g. lead silicate. In the preferred composition to 100 parts of polymer there are 30-70 of extract, 30-70 of a known plasticiser and 20-100 of a filler.
