Abstract

609,753. Sliver guides. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and DAKIN, G. March 6, 1946, No 6952. [Class 120(i)] A sliver is consolidated by drawing through a progressively restricting passage, the consolidation being effected in a series of defined stages of compression with an intervening stage or stages of compression control in which there is little or no increase of compression, there being no intervening release of compression between the compression stages. As shown, a known type of trumpet 4 is bored at 6 to take an adaptor nozzle 1 having a flared portion 8, a portion 9 of uniform diameter, a converging portion 10 and a further short length 11 of uniform bore. Sliver compression takes place at 8 and 10 in addition to initial compression at the entrance of the trumpet bore. The bore 11 defines the final compression of the sliver and reduces the effect of wear; radiusing of the outer end of the passage can be removed by grinding. When an obstruction occurs. the adaptor nozzle 1 can be removed easily and a new one fitted. In a modification, a trumpet is bored to provide an internal shoulder on which the adaptor nozzle rests. Instead of being detachable the adaptor nozzle may be formed integral with the trumpet or fixed thereto by welding &c.
