Abstract
609,495. Roasting grain. FITZPATRICK, H. J. (Seltman, C. von G.). Nov. 13, 1945, No. 30296. [Class 58] A method of roasting coffee or cacao beans, nuts and grains, consists in intercommingling the material and passing through it super heated steam at a predetermined temperature continuously at a predetermined uniform rate during a predetermined time interval at the end of which the roasting is automatically terminated. The roasting unit C consists of a perforated cylindrical drum 15 disposed eccentrically within a cylindrical housing 11 and rotatably supported on trunnion rollers 18 cooperating with external annular flanges 16. 17 and driven by a shaft 34 from a motor 40. Helical conveyer flights 20 having an outer diameter equal to the inner diameter of the drum are fixed rigidly in and extend the length of the drum, an axial passageway 21 being formed by the inner periphery. The steam inlet conduit 41 (not shown) and outlet 42 are closed at their inner ends and project into separate compartments outside the drum. The steam fills one compartment passes through the perforated drum wall and through the moving material into the other compartment from which it is exhausted by conduit 42. The material is delivered from an overhead hopper 25 through a pipe 24 and an adjustable collar 27 to the conveyer screw 20. The roasted material is discharged into a chute 32 onto a continuous woven wire conveyer 47 of a cooling unit F. Bridge bars 53 with triangular baffles 54 projecting through to the top of the hand are supported by the side walls 52. The material is discharged from chute 57. An exhaust fan 61 draws air through the material on the band via an outlet 59 in the side wall.
