Abstract

At least some of the halogen atoms in a halogenated silane are replaced with hydrogen by contacting a mixture of the halogenated silane and hydrogen or a hydrogen halide in the vapour state at an elevated temperature with aluminium, magnesium or zinc. The halogenated silane may contain at least three silicon-bonded halogen atoms or may be a silicon tetrahalide or a methyl-trihalogenosilane. Vapours of silicon tetrachloride may be reacted with hydrogen in a ratio of at least one mol. of hydrogen to one of silicon tetrachloride in the presence of granular aluminium at a temperature between 300 DEG and 500 DEG C. In examples: (1) silicon tetrachloride vapour and hydrogen are passed over heated aluminium to yield dichloro- and trichlorosilane and unreacted silicon tetrachloride; (2) methyltrichlorosilane and hydrogen are passed over heated aluminium granules with or without powdered copper to give methyl-dichlorosilane; (3) silicon tetrachloride vapour and hydrogen gas are reacted in the presence of heated granular zinc or magnesium to yield volatile compounds containing hydrogen having a boiling point below that of silicon tetrachloride; (4) methyltrichlorosilane vapour and hydrogen chloride gas are reacted in the presence of aluminium granules to yield compounds more volatile than and containing more hydrogen than methyltrichlorosilane; (5) a mixture of vapours comprising silico-chloroform and hydrogen are passed over heated aluminium granules to yield monosilane, monochlorosilane, dichlorosilane and unreacted silico - chloroform. Similarly, the bromosilones, e.g. silicon tetrabromide, tribromosilane, methyltribromosilane may be reacted with hydrogen, hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide in the presence of aluminium, zinc or magnesium.
