Abstract

608,677. Electrode materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 27, 1946, No. 6072. Convention date, March 3, 1945. [Class 39 (i)] A gas-filled electron discharge device, e.g. a glow discharge lamp, has an indirectly-heated electrode 13 in which the electron-emitting element is a disc 17 of pure columbium metal mounted in a beryllium housing 15 which is secured to metal support rods 23 sealed through the envelope 25. A heating filament 27 is provided, whose leads also extend through the envelope. A modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a cold cathode comprising a disc of pure columbium metal mounted on beryllium support wires. A further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), comprises a pancake coil of columbium, or beryllium with a columbiumemitting surface, secured centrally to a beryllium supporting rod.
