Abstract

607,842. Vehicle suspensions; trailer vehicles. DAVIES, A. R. Feb. 12, 1946, No. 4424. [Classes 108 (i) and 108 (ii)] A wheeled - support for a trailer vehicle or the like comprises a vertical stem 10 carrying at its lower end the axle of the road wheel and journalled in a bearing 17a formed in the lower part of a substantially cylindrical housing 2, which is carried by the vehicle chassis and accommodates a plunger 18 fixed to the stem 10; the plunger, which is free to rotate in the housing 2, is engaged by a resiliently-pressed friction element 28 adapted to move with the plunger axially within the housing. The housing 2, which has a liner 9, is closed at its upper end by a screw-cap 27, and at its lower end by a cover 15, the flange 14 of which is secured to the housing by bolts 12 welded to the housing. The cover 15 has a stepped boss 16, 17 adapted to fit within the liner 9 and to accommodate the bearing 17a. Springs 29 are fitted in holes 30, 31 in the friction element 28 and the screw-cap 27, respectively. A through-bolt 19 and nut 21 secure the plunger 18 to the stem 10, and the lower end of the latter is welded to a horizontal plate forming the bridge of a sheet-metal fork which carries the wheel at its lower end; each limb of the fork consists of two angle members welded together to form a T-section. If desired, the housing 2 may be charged with oil to provide an hydraulic damping effect, the plunger 18 then being provided with grooves 18a to allow the passage of the oil. The frame of the trailer comprises longitudinal and transverse members 3, 4, Fig. 2, of angle-iron, supporting the sheet-metal floor and sides 35. The frame is stiffened by bracing members 5, 7, 8 fixed to the housing 2 and to the frame members, and by an additional transverse member 6. The bracing members may be of T-section formed from angle-iron sections welded back to back. The corners of the body are stiffened by angle-iron corner pieces 34, which, at the front of the trailer, extend downwards to form legs which terminate in hemispherical feet.
