Abstract
606,066. Proofing textiles against mildew and rot. STEVENSONS (DYERS), Ltd., STEVENSON, F. M., PARTRIDGE, H. W., and KEY, G. E. Jan. 9, 1946, No. 840. [Class 140] Textile material is proofed against mould and bacteria by treating with an organic compound containing at least one phenolic group in conjunction with a quaternary ammonium salt wherein one of the organic radicals consists of or contains a saturated or unsaturated chain of not less than 10 carbon atoms with or without other chemical groups. The textile material can be in the form of loose fibre, yarn, cordage, woven or knitted fabric, may be in a dyed or undyed state, and may be treated simultaneously or subsequently with sizing preparations such as farina, soluble maize starch, maize dextrine, British gum, gelatine or finishing preparations. The phenolic compounds specified are salicylanilide and sodium pentachlorphenate The stated quaternary ammonium salts are cetyl pyridinum bromide and the methosulphate of methyldiethylaminoethylstearamide. The textile material can be treated with aqueous alkaline solutions of the phenolic compounds and the quaternary ammonium salts in any order or with the reaction product of the phenolic compounds and the quaternary ammonium compounds, the precipitate so formed by mixing equivalent quantities of. these components can be re-dissolved by further addition of quaternary ammonium salt and applied to the material or the precipitate may be applied dissolved in an organic solvent. The compounds are useful for proofing insulating tapes.
