Abstract

605,685. Roofs. LINDQUIST, G. L. Jan. 3, 1946, No. 271. [Class 20(iv)] In a roof structure comprising a foundation of concrete, porous concrete or similar material, a ventilating layer pervious to air and moisture lying over the foundation and arranged to permit the removal of moisture by air circulation, and an outer overlying layer of roofing felt or the like, the ventilating layer consists of a granulated filler, e.g., stone, spread evenly over the foundation and applied by means of an adhesive, e.g., tar or asphalt, which lies as a thin surface layer on the filler grains and does not prevent the required air circulation. A superficial sealing layer, e.g., of cement and a filler of ground stone or quartz, may be applied on top of the ventilating layer. In fig. 1, a heat insulating layer 2 of porous concrete or the like is supported on a concrete foundation 1. A metal sheet 5 forms a water drip for condensate &c. from the ventilating layer 3 and a rain water drip-sheet 6 is arranged under the edge of the roofing felt 4. In Fig. 2, the ventilating layer 9, arranged on the concrete foundation 8, contains a heat-insulating slab 10 of wood fibre, corrugated paper or the like. The felt 11 passes over a wood strip 13 nailed to a strip 12. The face of the strip 13 in contact with the layer 9 is corrugated to give the air access to the layer, The lower part of the layer is vented through holes 20 in the drain 15 which is insulated from the slab 8 by a glass or stone wool mat 16, collars 17 on the drain being secured by asphalt 18. A layer 19 of tow linen extends down into the asphalt. In a further modification, a roof joins a wall which rises above it, a wood rail being secured to the wall above the ventilating layer, but in contact therewith. The rail is vertically corrugated on the wall side to give the air access to the ventilating layer, and the roofing felt covers the ventilating layer and the rail except for the apertures left by the corrugations. A metal screen projects from the wall, over the rail. A preferred thickness for the ventilating layer is from 8 to 30 millimeters.
