605,662. Rotary kilns. SMIDTH & CO. AKTIESELSKABET, F. L. Jan. 2, 1946, No. 177. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1944. [Class 51(ii)] In a rotary kiln or like drum 1 having an enlarged overhanging end extension 5, the outer wall 5<1> of the extension is of lighter construction than is sufficient to give it self-supporting rigidity, the necessary rigidity being provided by the internal webs 9, 10 which assist, in normal manner, in the heat-exchange from the gases to the material being treated. The inner tube 8 is of greater thickness than in the usual constructions in which the webs 9, 10 do not increase the rigidity of the extension. The radial webs are bolted, riveted or welded to longitudinally arranged angle irons 12 secured to the tube 8 and the wall 5<1>, but, near the entrance to the kiln 1, where the webs are subject to intense heat, local yielding is permitted by fitting the webs between angle irons without securing them thereto. The radial webs may be secured to circumferential webs 10a, 10b, the webs 9a extending from the wall 5<1> to the tube 8 and the webs 9b from the wall 5<1> to the web 10b. An insulating layer, eg., of asbestos, may be applied externally to the wall 5', but in the hottest parts of the extension, the asbestos may be applied internally and protected by a thin steel lining.
