Abstract

605,438. Pre-gummed paper. SHAND KYDD, Ltd., and NEUMANN, S. March 1. 1944, No. 3880. [Class 140] Pregummed paper, mainly wall-paper, poster papers and bill-board papers, is made by application of a cold water soluble or cold water swelling adhesive powder in suspension in an aqueous liquid in which the adhesive powder is but partly soluble, to the rear surface, and drying. Thus only part of the tackiness of the adhesive is developed during its application to the back of the paper, and a coating of high effective concentration is obtained. Starch, starch containing flours, chlorinated starches, yellow dextrin, glues, gums or mixtures of such may be used as adhesive and aqueous alcohol as suspending liquid; application to the paper may be effected by spraying or brushing. Chemicals such as glycerine or calcium chloride for preventing curling of the paper may be added to the suspension, and bentonite or similar colloidal clay may be embodied in the adhesive to increase its slip characteristics.
