Abstract
605,173. Treatment of well-drilling fluids. DEHN, S. G. (National Lead Co.). Dec. 17, 1945, No. 34140. [Class 85] A well-drilling fluid contaminated by sulphate ions is purified by adding to the fluid a salt of an acid whose calcium salt is insoluble in the fluid and of a base whose sulphate salt is insoluble in the fluid, the salt being sufficiently soluble to react with the sulphates in the fluid. The salt may be of a group consisting of the barium or strontium salts of carbonic, oxalic, orthophosphoric and tartaric acids, and may be formed by the precipitation of barium carbonate from a solution of barium sulphide by means of sodium carbonate. A mud thinner and a concentrated colloidal clay may be added to the fluid with the salt before contamination occurs. The salt may be added to a mud base containing sulphate ions before its conversion to a fluid.
