[Classes 78 (iii), 78 (iv) and 78 (v)] In cranes and other lifting gear of the kind provided with a winding unit comprising a driving shaft, a winding drum, and a train of gears connecting the shaft to the drum, the casing enclosing the unit is provided with a plurality of alternative attachment means disposed at different sides of the casing whereby the casing can be secured detachably to any one of a plurality of different forms of lifting gear and in any one of several alternative positions thereon. The casing of the gear-box is in two parts 10 and 11 and the driving shaft 12 and the winding drum 32 are at opposite sides. The casing is provided on any of its sides; other than that adjacent the winding drum, with studs, or threaded holes 36 for receiving studs or screws, for attaching it to the lifting appliance. The driving shaft is mounted in bearings projecting from one side of the casing and is connected by gears 21, 22, 26, 27 to a bush 28 carrying the winding drum 32. The shaft 12 carries a friction-type lowering brake comprising discs 17, ratchet-wheel 18, pawl 19 and spring 20. The tubular support 30 for the shaft 29 is connected by strengthening webs 33 to bosses 34 provided with threaded holes for receiving attachment studs or screws.
