Abstract

604,638. Hats. NAGEL, M. Nov. 29, 1945, No. 32295. [Class 63] A method of making a hat from a straight length of tubular k n it t e d fabric which is capable of shrinking if wetted and ther dried, consists in closing one end of the length, wetting the fabric, inserting into the closed end a crown-forming block 1 and, if desired, a brim-forming block 2, gathering the open end 9 of the length to hold the blocks in position, and allowing the fabric to dry and shrink so that it takes the shape of the blocks. The fabric may be held on the block 1 by a band 10 and the block 2 may be in several parts hinged together. The open end of the fabric may be turned in to form the lower layer of a brim 8, and a stiffener may be secured between the layers. The shaped hat blank is finished as desired.
