Abstract
604,529. Stripping insulation from cables. WALLIS, D., HEIR, A. H., ALDRIDGE, H., and MASON, R. E. Nov. 13, 1945, No. 30283. [Class 36] A tool for stripping insulation from the end of a stranded cable comprises a cutter for severing the insulation to a selected depth by rotation of the tool, and means whereby the same, or subsequent, rotation of the tool imparts a desirable amount of twist to the eventuafly-bared wire strands. As shown in Fig. 4, the tool comprises a base 1 having at one end a handle 2 and fitted at the other end with a replaceable bed-plate 6 formed with a longitudinal groove to receive the end portion of the' cable. Pivoted in brackets 4 on the base is a lever 3 fitted at its forward end with an adjustable cutter 7 and a screw 17 adapted to grip the end of the cable. The lever 3 is constrained into its operative position by a spring 5. In use, the cable is gripped in one hand whilst the tool is rotated by the other hand in which operation, the insulation is severed and, by the grip of the screw 17, the ends of the strands are twisted. In a modification, the cutting-operation is performed before the end of the cable is gripped by the screw 17 for the subsequent twisting of the strands. Fig. 10 shows a further modification, for operating on cables having relatively stiff insulation, in which a pair of cutters 7, 71 are slidably mounted in a diametral slot in a head 13. Pins 16 project from the cutters into camslots in an adjusting-disc 14 for varying the depth of cut. In this modification, the cable is fed through an interchangeable guide-tube 20 at the front end of the tool. It is also stated that devices, such as a vice or jaws, may be used for mechanically gripping the cable; the rocking lever may be actuated by a power-driven cam; and the tool may be rotated by power-operated means.
