Abstract
604,486. Feeding sheets and webs. STEVENS, A. H. (Harris-Seybold-Potter Co.). Nov. 26, 1945, No. 31810. [Classes, 100(i) and 100(ii)] A sheet detector, which is used to control the operation of a printing or other machine in the case of improper feed, or which can be applied to effect transverse guiding of a web, is constructed so that detector is held by magnetic action against movement by the sheet or web. In Figs. 1 and 4, a detector 16 of magnetic material is pivoted to an oscillating arm 19 and as sheets are moved to engage front stops 12 they engage the lower end 15 of the detector which is lowered into a slot 14 in the feed board 10. The detector is thus moved to the dotted line position, Fig. 4, against the action of a horseshoe magnet 21 which is adjustably mounted in the arm 19, and is moved out of engagement with a projection 29 on a trip arm 27. If no sheet is fed the end 16 engages the projection 29 and in so doing causes the machine to be tripped. The magnet 21 is preferably arranged so that the arm 15 engages only one of its edges; and the magnet is adjustable in position and is controlled by a stop 26 which prevents it from swinging over. As shown in Fig. 6 the detector 16 is arranged adjacent to rollers 42, 43 which register a sheet 44 against side gauges after it is registered by front stops 45. An adjustably mounted magnet 52 controls the motion of the detector 16 which as in the prior case is moved out of the way of a projection 29 when engaged by the side edge of a sheet. In a further modification for adjusting the transverse register of a web a pair of detectors are pivotally mounted so as to engage the side edges of a moving web, and if the web deviates to either side a relay is operated to throw in a motor for restoring the position of the supply feed roll. The detector is held in normal position by magnetic action, and the relay is operated by a circuit which normally passes through the detector and through the magnet.
